JOB DESCRIPTIONS:

Firefighter:

Firefighter's work under the direction of a Company Captain. Duties include: firefighting, rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, first aid, CPR, HAZMAT, cleaning/service of tools and equipment, and work in Fire Alarm as a relief FCO, as needed. After one year of service, firefighter's are required to be able to work in the position of Engineer and drive the Fire unit's along with operate the pump and equipment on the unit.

Fire Communications Officer:

FCO's work out of Fire Alarm communication's center located in the Parish Government Complex. Duties include: answering emergency 911 phone calls, dispatching appropriate fire units, handling all phone and radio traffic to assist with emergencies, and maintain vital record's of communication's. Computer, typing, and clear communication skill's are important. FCO's hold the rank of Captain.

Fire Prevention Inspector:

FPI's work out of Headquarters during the day and from Fire Station 1 at night. Duties include: enforcement of fire codes, issue permit's, review construction plan's, maintain fire reports, investigate origin and cause of fires, testify in court on such matters, and work with law enforcement. FPI's hold the rank of Captain.

WORK SCHEDULES:

Firefighter's are in the Suppression Division.The work schedule for the Suppression Division is 24 hours on duty, 48 hours off duty. Report time is 7:00 AM and relieve time is 7:00 AM the following morning.

Fire Communication Officer's are in the Communication Division. The work schedule for the Communication Division is 12 hour shifts with a Day shift and a Night shift. Report time is 6:00 AM for the Day shift, and 6:00 PM for the Night shift.

Fire Prevention Inspector's are in the Fire Prevention Division. The work schedule for the Fire Prevention Division is the same schedule as the Suppression Division, 24 hours on duty, 48 hours off duty. Report time is 6:30 AM and relieve time is 6:30 AM the following morning.

Collective Bargaining Agreement:

Union contract with certain rights between St. Bernard Parish Firefighters and St. Bernard Parish Government.

Salary:

Starting wage for a Firefighter:

$8.56 per hour

avg. 56 hrs / week

Starting wage for a Fire Communication Officer: $14.79 per hour

avg. 42 hrs / week

Starting wage for a Fire Prevention Inspector:

$10.63 per hour

avg. 56 hrs / week

Paid Annual Leave:

Earn12 hours per month,1st through10th year

Earn 1 hour more for each additional year thereafter

Paid Sick Leave:

Earn 12 hours per month

2% Annual Salary Increase:

As required by state law

Supplemental Pay:

$500.00 per month from the State after one year of service

Health Insurance:

Single or Family

Parish pays 70% of premium

Employee pays 30% of premium

Retirement:

Vested after 12 years of service

3.3% of pay, per year of service (ex 20 years = 66%, 25 years = 83%, 30 years = 99%)

Eligibility: 20 years and age 50, or 25 years and any age

Also has Survivor Benefits and a DROP

Paid Holidays:

14 designated Holidays per year

Holiday pay is 2 times regular pay

You only get paid for Holidays actually worked

Personal Day:

One personal day off per year
